JoikuSpot – your S60 handset as a WLAN gateway

The S60 community has been going all berzerk over JoikuSpot over the last few days, and for a good reason. This free third-party application (in beta) turns your S60 handset to a wifi access point, sharing your cellular net connection (HDSPA, 3G, GPRS, EDGE etc.) with other devices over WLAN.

Brief testing shows that this works very nicely with a Mac. Start the JoikuSpot app, allow other clients to share the net connection, look for the JoikuSpot access point in the AirPort menu and off you go. The free beta version seems to have some shortcomings though – during brief testing, I could not find a way to protect the newly created WLAN AP, which means that everyone within wifi distance can "reuse" your cellular internet connection.

All in all, this is a very promising prospect while on the move. I can only imagine the reaction from guests on my boat, for instance, when I state that "yeah, there's a public WLAN here if you need net access". Under sail.

If you're still not completely sold, take a look at more JoikuSpot coverage elsewhere.

I had problems with this and E51. It works fine for few seconds, then data transfer just stops.
Also some protection would be nice (specially if You use company APN).
And yes, I am completely sold, my iPod touch would be much more useful when this is in my E51.
