No iPhone? No iPod touch? Still want to sync with Google contacts?

In the OS X 10.5.3 update dropped by Apple yesterday, the Address Book provides a capability to synchronise your local address book with Google contacts.

If you have an iPhone or an iPod touch, that is.

I was slightly miffed by this choice of policy from Apple, but then I ran into the LifeHacker instructions on how to enable the feature even if you don't have one of the said devices. The method seems to assume that at least some sort of iPod has been connected to your machine, which I have done, long time ago (I have the original mini).

Based on brief testing, the hack seems to work as specified. Your mileage may vary.
