A reader in my Finnish Omenamehu.org discussion forum (thanks Sälli) brought to my attention his open source alternative to SyncTunes: iTuneMyWalkman.
From the feature list:
- Synchronizes the contents of specific iTunes playlists to your mobile phone.
- Detects automatically when the device is connected.
- Creates directory structure according to artists/albums, playlists, or genres.
- User can define how much space is left on the memory card.
- Copied files can be re-encoded on the fly to save space.
- Play counts can be incremented automatically when songs are transferred.
- Pictures and videos taken with the phone camera can be automatically moved to a user-specified location on your hard disk or imported to iPhoto during synchronization.
In other words, the application contains interesting additional functionality compared to SyncTunes. I have not had time to take it for a test ride yet, but will do so as soon as possible and report back.

Syncing selected playlists with it
I happened to test drive the application..its good. Only problem is that there's no conflict resolution. When you choose to sync selected playlists only, it delete everything from the folder on your phone before it starts to upload stuff. Its mentioned in the settings somewhere, but its easy to miss. I ended up wiping all the music from my N91 and had to restore it again. Just a heads up.
Could not find the option
I could not find the option anywhere in the preferences – if it's there, it's well hidden.
If there is an option, I reckon the default should very well be the opposite. In a worst case scenario, people might end up losing tunes that they only carry on their memory card.
